Over three years, CoastLines provided online and face-to-face professional development to 90 middle and high school teachers. Funded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF’s) Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program, the project’s goal was to promote geospatial technologies as a tool for engaging middle and high school students in scientific explorations of coastal ecology at three sites in the NSF’s Long-Term Ecological Research Network. During the panel presentation, Steven Moore, Ph.D., the principal investigator for CoastLines, reviewed summative evaluation findings about the efficacy of the hybrid professional development approach used by the project. Then, six CoastLines participants discussed what it was like to learn GIS in a hybrid professional development format. The purpose of the session was to discuss changes that were made to the professional development format and identify the strategies that worked best.
